What I think about blogging is that you can write about what you feel about what the question's are asking you, and that you can be straight forward about it. I like the way we write what comes to mind, and how others can respond t0 it.

Examining Pop/Sub Pop Culture in Technology

For M F April 12th class AND TuTH class April 13th

While we are exploring popular culture I’d like us to think about technology/digital technology as a kind of popular or sub-popular culture and how it promotes democratic ideals. So, start by opening up a Microsoft Word document (BEFORE YOU POST ANYTHING ON THE BLOG I WOULD FIRST TYPE IT IN A WORD DOCUMENT); next take a couple of minutes to think about the kinds of technology and digital technology you use in your life; then free write about at least 2 kinds of technology you can think about.

In your blog post you need to briefly but specifically identify the kind of technology/digital technology that you believe is a part of pop/sub popular culture. Is it a part of pop or sub pop culture or maybe both? Explain why you see it being popular or underground and then critique the technology. For example Facebook is a very very popular social networking site that I would argue is popular culture for many people but mostly people between the ages of 12-30 because computer technology has thrived and become a part of life for many in the last 30 years. But many people argue that Facebook negatively influences people to gossip or place hurtful posts on people’s pages. Here I’ve presented one aspect of technology, discussed why I think it’s popular and critiqued it. You do the same. Then I’d like you to further answer at least 2 questions below about technology in general.

The additional questions are as follows:

- For you, what does it mean to be technologically literate?

- What kind of values or social etiquette exists in cyberspace?

- How does technology shape culture, education, poverty, racism, sexism?

- How is technology taught and learned in this country?

- How does access to technology benefit citizens in terms of power, race, gender, socioeconomic status?

- Why does our culture consider some technological activities to be officially useful and appropriate (for ex: facebook, online research etc)?

- What kind of technology do you find problematic and why?

- In what ways, are computers used to find practical information? And how does that impact how we value information?

- In what ways has technology impacted your life and the kind of popular or sub-popular culture you’re into?

- How do computers promote or diminish democracy in society and at work?

**KEEP AN EYE ON TIME! YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE CLASS HOUR TO WORK ON THIS SO IF YOU FINISH EARLY TACKLE SOME MORE QUESTIONS TO PROVIDE A THOROUGH BLOG POST.

Take 10 minutes to make sure your blog post from last class has thoroughly provided information to your peers. If you’d like to add more (revise) go right ahead.

After, you need to read through at least 2 blog posts and use the following questions to help guide your response (REMEMBER TYPE IN A WORD DOCUMENT FIRST).

- What did you think of the bloggers critique of pop/sub pop culture in relation to technology?

- What would you have liked the blogger to write more about?

- What do you know about the pop/sub popular culture the blogger wrote about?

- In what ways, does your post relate to this bloggers post?

- What else did you want to know about this bloggers opinion or the culture they discuss?
